Conversational Peeps

12 Tips for a more conversational read

Why A Conversational Read?

In today’s fast paced world, people are busier than ever. We multitask while listening to commercials, and our attention is not usually focused on listening to the content, or really even caring about it. As a listener, you can hear a noise but you don’t have to concentrate or even focus on the noise, unless it grabs your attention in some way. Obviously this makes it very difficult for advertisers to sell their products!   Our job as voice talent is to get their attention, make them aware of their “pain point”, and ultimately, convince them to buy the product. That said, in the commercial market, there are many reasons why a conversational, real read works better to “sell” a product rather than the older, hard sell “announcer” style:

  • We are an educated consumer – we do not like being told what to do or what to buy
  • We research products to educate ourselves on what to buy, where to buy, and who to buy from
  • We ask for the advice of our friends on what to buy – both in person and online
  • We look at real testimonials from our peers for validation
  • Peer based Marketing calls for a Peer based conversational “sell”
  • Advertisers typically hire a voice talent in the same target market that they are selling to (Peer based Marketing)

Therefore, when a director, casting agent or producer asks you for a “Conversational” or “Natural” read, what they are really asking for is a believable read, one that sounds authentic and genuine.

Conversations

12 Tips to Help you Sound Conversational

A lot of times when a student tries to be more conversational, they drop their energy too much, which in turn makes their pacing too slow.  The melody and passion become flat.  Remember, as voiceover artists, our goal is to engage our audience in a personal conversation so that they will actually listen to us rather than just hear us.  This type of read is not about how pretty  or well executed you sound –   its about how well you connect, engage and communicate with the listener. Communication comes from a deeper place within human relations, which is more emotional  – and less technically diction focused.

Concentrate on developing your conversational ear.  Start by really listening to yourself when you are in conversation with others. Listen to your pitch, your inflection patterns, and pay close attention to the phrasing and pacing of your words.  Record yourself having different conversations with people and listen back frequently to get a feel for different emotions and context. (You can do this easily using your mobile phone!)

Try these tips:

  1. Clearly define your target audience: Know who you are talking to – gender, age range, economics, locale and predicaments
  2. Visualize who you are talking to: Make it an audience of ONE – pick an actual person that has a name, and is someone you know.
  3. Become the character: If your role is that of a mother talking about the best paper towels to clean up her family’s messes, you don’t pretend to be a mother, you actually become the mother in the script.
  4. Play the Paper: Imagine the face of the person you just pictured in the actual copy and talk to them.
  5. Pre-Roll: Preface the copy with words such as “ You know…” or “ Let me tell you something….” before you start. This will help you get into the flow of the conversation easier.
  6. Speak from your Diaphragm and Chest, not your throat: This typically means you start in a lower register, which helps you to sound more connected and authentic.
  7. Phrasing Phrasing Phrasing: Focus on smoothing out the delivery and tumbling the speech more so it feels a bit more like a stream of ideas. Imagine each word touching the next with as little space in between as possible.  Example: I – want – to – go – to – the – grocery – store – today – and – buy – some – ice – cream – sandwiches. When spoken naturally, that sentence may sound more like: I (wantogo) to the (grocerystoretoday) and (buysome) (icecreamsandwiches).  This does not mean to slur the words, but to phrase them together as you would in normal speech.
  8. Emphasize Key Words: Determine which words are important to the story – emphasis words may be “lengthened” (adjust the pacing) or inflected differently
  9. Improv: A creative choice that you make with your delivery that may not be indicated on the script, but one that makes sense and helps to make your delivery sound realistic.  Some examples of creative decisions are adding a chuckle, a sigh, pausing for impact or smiling as you speak.
  10. Physicality: Hold an object in your hands and point to it as if you are having a real conversation.
  11. Avoid Repetition and Predictable Patterns: This will “lull” your listener to sleep! Make sure you have cohesive variety (between phrases) – Be aware of your pitch and pace from sentence to sentence. Watch out for similar beginnings/endings from sentence to sentence.
  12. Three times a charm: Read the copy through once. Then Read the copy a 2nd time WAY over the top. Then re-read the copy again in your normal voice you will notice that now, it will then be a more natural read.

VO2GoGo June 2015 Class in Irvine

VO2GoGo | Irvine

June 20 2015  @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Reserve your seat now!

The award-winning VO2GoGo voiceover classes continue.

The VO2GoGo curriculum is an amazing series of over 30 live classes, building your skills in voiceover categories and the technology you need to master, giving you the tools to manage a thriving, digital-friendly voiceover career.

VO2GoGo live classes have won backstage’s Readers’ Choice Award as Best VO Classes and Teacher for the last four years in a row. And every month, a new set of skills is explored and mastered, in a total of 4 classes, all in one day-long intensive.

Here’s the schedule of classes for this month.

• Voicing Specialty Narration VO
• Mastering VO Marketing
• Creating Your Own VO Content
• BONUS: VO Workout Class

Voicing Specialty Narration VO

Separate and apart from traditional documentary narration, there are several major categories of content-specific narration work that centers around large bodies of information: scientific, technical, legal, medical and so on. If your personal knowledge extends to any of these spaces, you’ll find yourself with yet another way to make a living as a VO performer.

The skills you’ll get:

– identifying non-traditional marketing areas for voicework
– how your passions can be turned into voice projects
– working in specialty narration even if you’re not a trained expert in the field
– pricing and client management in specialty narration
– and more

Mastering VO Marketing

Become agile with the markets you reach, tradition and brand spanking new. Who would have thought that IVR, or apps, or digital talking outdoor signage, or e-books would all be vibrant markets in which to sell your VO skills? Or that any one of those might end up being the largest category of income for many VO artists? Learn how in this vital class.

The skills you’ll get:

– identifying the usual suspects: radio, television and other traditional markets
– the unusual suspects: digital products, IVR, training, toys, GPS devices and more
– how to target a demo specifically to a particular market, for little or no cost
– pricing individual and package rates for the strangest of markets
– and more

Between Class 2 and Class 3, attendees will relax, take a break and enjoy a one-hour walkaway lunch. There are plenty of restaurants nearby to choose from.

Creating Your Own VO Content

Hire your inner voice…and entrepeneur. Why wait for someone else to hire you? You’ve got a voice, and you’re already in charge of You, Inc, so put yourself to work, and collect all the profits. Create your own content, piggy back on events in the news, big movie releases and wake up every morning with money in the bank – from people buying your audio products.

The skills you’ll get:

– watching production calendars for potential tie-ins
– the quickest way to create audio products
– identifying and marketing to potential buyers over the web
– how to build a library of long-tail product that sells forever
– and more

4 BONUS: VO Workout Class

Each day-long class will conclude, time permitting, with Participants adding another moment in front of the microphone, with direction and adjustment from the instructor. The Auditors will watch and make note of the adjustments given, and each Participant will receive the MP3 file of this (and the other) recordings made during the day.

The skills you’ll get:
– work with alternative copy from the day’s content
– bring their own audition or workout copy
– be directed and adjusted, and recorded on mic
– deepen their knowledge of self-direction and iterative improvement
– and more

Information and materials provided? You bet.

In this intensive, all students, Auditors and Participants alike, will be provided with lecture notes and VO copy. Participants will be directed and recorded three times throughout the day; Auditors will observe that process. The recordings will be given to each Participant to use as mini-starter demos (in advance of completed professional demos), showing their mastery of the particular category of voicework performed.

See the explanations below for the differences between Participant and Auditor tickets.

Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and are open to VO2GoGo Pros for 72 hours prior to general availability.

VO2GoGo live classes have won backstage’s Readers’ Choice Award as Best VO Classes and Teacher for the last four years in a row. And every month, a new set of skills is explored and mastered, in a total of 4 classes, all in one day-long intensive.

Here’s the schedule of classes for the day.

• Mastering Cold Reading Of VO Scripts • Voicing News And Info VO • Voicing IVR And Phone Prompts • BONUS: VO Workout Class

Mastering Cold Reading of VO Scripts

You don’t get days or even hours to work with VO scripts – you’re expected to turn around auditions, and head into the studio to perform, almost instantly. In this class, we’ll look at how to instantly size up a script, make character choices, and balance speed with excellence. The skills you’ll get: – how to quickly size up a script and its parts – what key elements to look for in the copy – how to avoid two key mistakes when marking your copy – three ways to instantly become better at cold reading – and more

Voicing News and Info VO

Like commercials, narration and IVR, the category of news and information products have a certain style and performance technique unique to the category. Traditional radio and television outlets have been joined by podcasts, satellite, cable, email blasts and other new connections, giving you an even greater opportunity to audition and land these lucrative jobs. The skills you’ll get: – how the target audience affects your performance – classic and new styles of news and information performance – learning from the giants of newscasting – pricing and client management in the news and information workspace – and more

Between Class 2 and Class 3, attendees will relax, take a break and enjoy a one-hour walkaway lunch. There are plenty of restaurants nearby to choose from.

Voicing IVR and Phone Prompts

There are over 10 billion phones in the world – one and one-half for every man, woman and child on the planet. 70% are business phones, and all phones have some sort of voice mail or outbound messaging associated with them. Learn how, in the most profitable category of voicework in many portfolios, and the most plentiful of work categories, you’ll find a largely hidden market of work. The skills you’ll get: – why this skill is the most lucrative in the 21st century – the type of voice needed for phone prompt work – it’s not what you think! – how the marketplace for IVR work has shifted, and how you can take advantage – why this union-covered work is so lucrative – and more

Presenters: Bob Merkel

Bob MerkelVoiceZam is leading the business of voice-overs further into the digital age. But its beginnings are rooted in the inspiring personal journey of VoiceZam’s visionary founder – Bob Merkel. It’s a journey that shows a rare and winning combination of creativity and discipline.

While theatre and communications kept his interest in the early-going at the University of Wisconsin, Bob took that flair for performance, and brought it to the field of software engineering, where he moved into a position as senior software engineer by the mid ‘80s.

Not long after, a friend at church saw Bob’s unique combination of skills and invited him to be a creative director of his advertising agency. Back into the stimulating milieu of advertising, Bob thrived as he directed film, developed ideas with writers, and handled production projects. He may not have realized it then, but Bob was sowing the seeds of VoiceZam.

“I did a lot of work with writers to match voiceovers for broadcast scripts,” says Bob. “At that time, there would be several demos on the cassette, with seven or eight different reads (or clips), per demo.”

As the producer, Bob had to specifically match the voice to the project, and its target audience. But this tedious task of discovering the right voice quickly became frustrating; needlessly so, in Bob’s mind. The process meant picking a cassette, trusting that you would come across a talent’s voice that fit the current project, and usually settling for “good”… not “great”.

“You’d be staring at a tape rack, with only talent the names as a guide to select” Bob says. “We’re talking hundreds of tapes sent in from talent hoping to score a job.”

After considerable attention to the task, Bob’s innovative right/left brain came up with a categorized database of voices. It was workable, but eventually that process spawned a new project. The internet was coming of age, and Bob’s idea was to take this database concept and put a version of it online to make it easier for producers to find talent.

“I spent 3 month, designing and coding a prototype. Then, armed with my laptop and little portable speakers, I demonstrated the system to different agency producers in Chicago. It showed them a totally new way to find talent – they loved it,” says Bob. “Unfortunately, I then looked at the startup costs and had to let the dream go.”

Later, with newfound time and money, Bob hired a development company while remaining the chief architect. In 2003, VoiceZam came to life, with a patent for the technology issued in 2008.

Today, VoiceZam is approaching its fourth version release, based on HTML5, making it completely platform independent. With VoiceZam, a voiceover talent finally has a proven tool that ensures producers hear every read within their demos.

Bob continues to make improvements with VoiceZam, eliminating the barriers in the demo-listening process and finding new ways to help voiceover talent find success in their own businesses.

“My hope is that VoiceZam continues to pump new life into voiceover talent’s careers—because a quality demo is still the most critical marketing tool in the voiceover profession.” he says.

Host: Anne Ganguzza

Anne GanguzzaAnne Ganguzza is the President and Founder of VO Peeps, and has an undeniable passion for voiceover and sharing her knowledge with others.  This led her to a full time career in VO and inspired her to form a local meetup group for voice over artists originally known as the Orange County VO Peeps.  The group gained in popularity quickly, and with it’s online presence, attracted attention from others around the globe.  Realizing the tremendous advantages of sharing and disseminating information and resources globally, and effectively “breaking down” the traditional barriers of local meetup groups,  the organization began extending its memberships to the online community.  They have since dropped the “locale” portion of their moniker, and  are now known simply as  – VO Peeps.

As a voice over artist, her voice is described as professional, believable, warm,  and friendly. Her experience includes voices for corporate narration, E-learning, IVR/On Hold Systems, medical narration, commercials, infomercials, Audio Books, Live Theatre Broadcasts, and more.  She has many years experience in public speaking and over 20 years experience in corporate and educational training, and is an exceptionally clear and concise technical speaker – able to make those difficult scripts easy to understand!   For more information, please visit Anne on her website at https://anneganguzza.com or email her at anne@anneganguzza.com.

In addition to her unwavering and passionate commitment to her Peeps at vopeeps.com,  you can also find her at: theelearningvoice.commedical-narration.com, and phone-voice.com.
