In the voiceover business, your instrument is your voice. You have to know how to play it. That's why singing lessons can really improve the quality of your voice. In this video, Anne lets us in on a little secret on how singing lessons can help you be a better voice actor.

Hey everyone in today's video we're gonna talk about how singing lessons can actually help you advance your voiceover career.

I'm super excited because I'm going to be taking a singing lesson! Can singing lessons help you with becoming a better voice actor? Yes, they absolutely can. Why? Well, I basically wanted to seek out a singing instructor so that I could learn about different vocal placements. When you can speak from different places it can help you with different ranges in your voice. So, you can speak in your chest, you can speak more in your throat, you can speak close to your mouth, your nose, up in your eyeballs, up in your forehead.

So, definitely where you're thinking and where you're placing your voice can affect what you sound like. So in order to exercise those muscles, I'm taking singing lessons and doing some really cool warm-ups. Vocal warm-up exercises really help to warm up the vocal cords and help them to expand and contract and be more open so that again it can help me with my voice. I won't be sounding raspy if I want to record something in the morning and I've got that morning voice which is really low, sometimes I want that, but I can change it if I want to. I'm learning about different placements that can really help me to change my voice and give it a little bit different texture, a little bit different range.

When you're looking for a singing instructor there's a couple of important things you should watch out for. Number one make sure that you're going to have some sort of visual contact with your singing instructor because that allows them to show you different locations to where your voice is going to be. They can also demonstrate so you can actually see if there's a specific way that you need to shape your mouth or feel your breath or feel where the vibrations are coming from. So make sure that they have a visual presentation. My singing instructor does her lessons through Skype or through zoom so that works really well for me. Also, she came highly recommended by somebody in the voiceover industry and that helps because not only is she a phenomenal singer and a phenomenal instructor at singing, she's also in the voiceover industry. So, it really helps her to have a grasp on both of the industries and how we can use one to complement the other. I am so excited about doing weekly singing exercises so you too can expand your range and also have a whole lotta fun.

Much love and Keep on rockin' your biz!

XOXO,

Anne
