Insider tips from a podcasting veteran
So today I want to talk about the five things you need to know before you start podcasting.
The first thing you need to know about podcasting is that it's awesome. It's an amazing way to get your personal brand out there for anybody. And what's so amazing about it is that you don't even have to be talking about voiceover. You can talk about your passions. And I think that that is one of the most important things to know is that your topic should be something that you enjoy talking about because the second thing I need you to know about podcasting is that, oh, it's a lot of work.
So yeah. Number two, podcasting is a lot of work. You need to be very committed and dedicated to putting out that content on a very consistent basis. If you want to be successful in your podcast, there are probably 90% of the podcasts that start that only create maybe seven to 10 episodes. And then I think people realize how much work it is. And so it just kind of fizzles out. So be prepared and understand that this will take a substantial amount of time to continually generate quality content on a consistent basis.
Number three. I personally love to have great quality audio for my podcasts. There's a lot of podcasts out there and not everybody has wonderful audio. However, if you're a voice talent and you are wanting to use your podcast, Ultimately to market yourself, maybe not firsthand as a voice talent. Maybe you want to market the topic you're talking about, but also in the credits you say, oh, by the way, I'm a voice talent. I think your audio should be excellent. There's a lot of podcasts out there that the audio quality is not great. So if you are going to say anywhere in your description that you are a voice talent, make sure that you're. Is excellent. And we shouldn't have a hard time with that because we all have the studios that we go into.
The one thing you want to consider when you are working on that audio is the audio quality of anybody that you might be interviewing. Make sure you give tips to your guests so that they can also achieve the best audio possible. If they're going to be on an interview with you and your podcast, if they can, you know, go to a quiet area of the house, make sure that the, you know, the washer and the dryer are not running. Make sure the dog's not barking. If they have a microphone, that's great. Also, make sure they have headphones that will help as well. So prepare them with tips to create the very best audio that they can. And you'll find that your post-editing and your post-processing is going to be a whole lot easier as well.
Number four, make sure you have a way to promote your podcast so that you can grow your own. That can be in the form of a website in the form of social media promotions, creating content clips that you can distribute on YouTube, whatever that might be, have a method for distributing and promoting that podcast so that you can grow your audience.
Number five. I have so many people that ask me, how can I make money on my podcast? So number five tip is to not worry so much right away, how you can make money off your podcast because I'll tell you what it really is a labor of love for the majority of people out there that are podcasting. It is a challenge to make money off of your podcasts. Because number one, people don't always like advertisements in their products. You could sell advertisements. That is one way to do it. The other thing you could do is try to get sponsorships, get links and deals that you can offer to your listeners. That's all possibilities to generate revenue for your podcast. But I think you have to go into it with the mindset that you're creating and sharing something that you love first and make it about that instead of about how much money can I make off of your podcast to begin with.
If you're passionate, your listeners will follow and also your advertisers and possible sponsorships will follow as well. So to wrap this up, podcasting is an awesome way to promote your brand. Don't forget. It's an awful lot of work. You need the commitment to create a consistent quality podcast, make sure that you have quality audio so that you're representing your voice-over brand. You need to find ways to promote your podcast so that you can grow your audience. And remember to always go into it with passion first, not money. If you go into it with your passions first, the money will follow.
Thanks so much, guys. I'll see you next week.
